"Significant contraction" of Galway 2020 on the cards

The Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture programme which had already been ravaged by a series of unfortunate cancellations this year will undergo a process of "significant contraction," the board said this evening after it met earlier in the day.

The board held the meeting to discuss the evolving situation regarding Covid 19 and how they would move forward during these unprecedented times.

"In light of the extraordinary challenges we are facing and the unknown timeline as a result of this ongoing public health emergency, the board of Galway 2020 today decided that a significant contraction of the programme is necessary," a spokeswoman said afterwards.

"Decisions, which will be taken in the very near future, will be consistent with Government policy and will be in the best interest of the health of the public, our team, cultural partners and our volunteers. More detailed information will be provided in the days ahead.

"The board of Galway 2020 wishes to acknowledge and thank our team and cultural partners for all of their hard work and commitment to date," the statement concluded.

It was not clear if there had been any discussion to push the 2020 programme further into 2021 than it already goes.
