1958, when I was two years old. My mother was taken away in an ambulance. She said ‘Don’t worry I’ll be back.’ She came back a few days later in a black taxi carrying something wrapped in white lace. Turned out to be my baby sister Maureen.

University of Galway conference to discuss teaching Ireland’s history of institutional abuse in schools

University of Galway academics are calling for the history of Ireland’s institutions to be taught in post-primary schools ahead of a conference to discuss the issue this weekend.

The one-day conference, organised by the Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR) at the university and entitled ‘Teaching the dark history of Ireland’s Institutions: Engaging educators and policymakers’, will take place on Saturday October 15 from 10.30am to 4pm.

Tomorrow (Friday) evening, a free talk on Ireland’s Housing Crisis will take place at Kennys Bookshop in Liosbán as Rory Hearne, housing expert and author of Gaffs: Why no one can buy a house, and what we can do about it will be joined in conversation by Karen Feeney, Head of Client Services at Galway Simon Community. It will take place at 6pm and all are welcome.

Rory and Karen will discuss Ireland’s housing policy and how it is affecting a new generation who are finding themselves locked out of the housing market, and what we should do about it. Many millennials are finding themselves trapped in a game of rental roulette, stuck living at home as adults, and many are on the brink of homelessness. In his new book Gaffs, which just been published, Rory urges us to think about the people behind the statistics and shows us that there is a way towards a future where everyone has access to a home.

One such person was John Mulholland. A man with an unquenchable energy and quest for progress. A man who was always getting on with getting on. A man who could sing and tell tales to beat the band. Whose unique personality matched Galway, who didn’t need two names to get around town. Everyone knew Mul’. and this week as the news of his passing, everyone mourns him.

Quarter century of the Galway Science & Technology Festival

Galway Science & Technology Festival will run from November 13-25 celebrating 25 years of inspiring young people and the public about the world around us. The Festival commenced in 1998 and over the years has grown to become the largest event in Ireland for the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The Festival will feature over 200 free events for 35,000 primary and secondary school students. There are a variety of shows and workshops for schools and the Festival has partnered with Galway City Museum, Galway Atlantaquaria and Brigit’s Garden to provide STEM related workshops and tours.
