Connolly welcomes proposal for two new pedestrian crossings

Plans from Galway City Council to install two new pedestrian crossings on roads in the west of the city in 2023 have been welcomed by a local councillor.

Cllr John Connolly said that for some time he has been pursuing the development of a pedestrian crossing in Rahoon to complement the ongoing works on the enhancement of Millers Lane.

“It has been confirmed to me that the design work on the crossing at this location has been completed and the council are currently looking for companies to quote to undertake the work. Should no issues arise, it is envisaged that the crossing will be installed by Quarter 2 2023.”

“The Millers Lane works are currently ongoing; people will be aware that this will include a pedestrian crossing across the Western Distributor Rd linking both sections of Millers Lane. This will now give a continuous segregated pedestrian/cycle path from Kingston to Rahoon Cemetery.”

Cllr Connolly has also welcomed confirmation he received that a further pedestrian crossing is to be installed on Seamus Quirke Rd.

“The Browne roundabout is a very difficult one for pedestrians to negotiate, yet it forms part of a popular walking and cycling route as people cross approximate to the junction to use the hospital grounds as a short-cut going to and from the city centre to the Western Suburbs.

“A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on Seamus Quirke Road at the approach to the Browne Roundabout helping to enable people to cross safely at that point. The project has been included in the Capital Plan and included in the Annual Service Delivery Plan 2023,” he said.
