Fourteen months for dangerous car chase

A drink driver who led gardai on a dangerous high speed chase throughout the city for over a half an hour last year has been jailed for 14 months and disqualified for six years.

At Galway District Court yesterday Robert Cranney (27) with an address at 35 Ballinfoyle Park, Headford Road, pleaded guilty to the charges of drink driving at Tonagurran, Corrundulla, and with dangerous driving at Upper Salthill on April 12, 2008. He also pleaded guilty to a hit and run at Upper Salthill and 12 counts of dangerous driving at various locations on the same date.

Man jailed for twenty one months after assaults on gardai

A man who collided his uninsured motorbike into parked vehicles while drug-driving and then attempted to evade arrest by viciously kicking and punching gardai was sentenced to a total of 21 months at Galway District Court this week.

Thomas Barrett had also kicked a female garda in the stomach after being stopped on another occasion and refusing to be searched. The 37-year-old with an address given as 2 St Nicholas Park, Doughiska, and formerly of 73 Corrib Park, Newcastle, was brought before Judge Mary Fahy last Monday and pleaded guilty to a number of offences.

Plop drop at Ardrahan fair

As part of a drive to raise funds for the redevelopment of Ballyglass National School, Ardrahan GAA will host a family fun day on Saturday June 20 . A wide range of events will take place including the main attraction, a €2,000 ‘plop-drop’.

The ‘plop drop’ will involve tickets being sold that entitle you to a specified square metre of ground. Past pupil, and jockey Paddy Brennan will then lead a horse around the course until the animal ‘does his business’, if he does it on your square metre you win €2,000. Tickets for the plop drop will be €20.
