A major exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Galway-native Irish scholar and professor Tomás Ó Máille is open at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Culture & Citizenship: Tomás Ó Máille was commissioned by the Department of Irish in the University of Galway and produced in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy and the National Library.

The exhibition will shed new light on the history of the Irish language and will deepen our understanding of its status nationally.

Galway Hooker are partnering with Hometree to offset the ecological impact of the Organic Pilsner beer’s production. For every Organic Pilsner that’s ordered, Galway Hooker will make a donation to Hometree. Aidan has highlighted two interesting items that have been consigned to this auction - Firstly a fine pair of Howard Chairs. Howard chairs were first made back in the 1820s. These chairs were a very traditional armchair of the utmost elegance and comfort. Made with traditional coil springs and feather and down seat cushion as standard. The late Hubert Butler once wrote a delightful essay called Influenza on Aran in which he examined the evidence for the early Irish saints. His title is explained in the first few sentences: “When I arrived in Aran by the Naomh Eanna at Kilronan I was sneezing, and by the time I had raced to St Enda’s Church at Killeany and seen the stone on which he had floated in from Connemara I was feverish and coughing.

I spent the rest of my time in bed reading the only two books on Aran and its saints that I could find, a big one by Mr O Siochain [Aran: Islands of Legend] and a small one by Father Scantlebury [Saints and Shrines of Aran Mor]”. Later, during the week, a learned friend came to see him, and Butler, excited by the two books, attempted to communicate some of his enthusiasm to his visitor, “but I failed miserably”. The reason for his failure, Butler tells us, lay in the fact that the study of the Aran saints – and the majority of the saints of the early Irish church - had been taken over by “textual criticism and philology and scientific excavations”, which he regretted as the Medusa-gaze of dry as dust.

Galway City Council should open the toilets at Ballyloughane Beach every weekend, following an outcry for three successive weekends this year when the existing facilities have been closed to the public, it was claimed yesterday.

Councillor Terry O’Flaherty told the Advertiser that the closure was causing a huge amount of inconvenience for the many people who like to go for walks in the area, especially when the facilities at Salthill are open all the time.
