To celebrate 10 years in Galway City, a number of teachers at the College are setting out to run the Connemara Marathon/Half-Marathon this Sunday April 23. The proceeds of their run, which people can contribute to on Gofundme/ Merlin College 10th Anniversary Run, are in aid of raising money to develop an all-weather running track at Doughiska Park.

The track, when completed, will be a wonderful asset to both the school’s athletic club and local athletic clubs Castlegar AC and Tribal Running along with the general public.

The school principal, John Cleary said the school was adamant a track would be available for the school and locality so as to build on the great successes the school had had in athletics in recent years.

Currently the school are All-Ireland 400m relay senior Boys champions, won the National U16 100m in 2021, won the All-Ireland Diversity Games this year and currently have the fastest U16 60m boy in the country. ‘This isn’t just an investment for our school’s athletic team or the locality’, said Mr. Cleary, ‘it is an investment in Galway’s future Olympians’.

The athletics success at the school this year builds on the reputation the school has built in the area of sports, being senior All Ireland Basketball Finalists this year also along with recently being crowned Connaught Champions in U15 ‘A’ Soccer.
