Garda appeal for crash witnesses

Last week’s issue featured a story entitled ‘Mystery surrounds fatal bank holiday crash’ which included a garda appeal for witnesses into the road accident that claimed the life of 25-year-old Saffron Richie.

It was stated that the front seat passenger had been the deceased woman’s older sister Elisa. It should have read that the passenger was the older sister Angela Richie and that Elisa is Saffron’s twin. Saffron had also lived in Tulsk, Roscommon. The Galway Advertiser is happy to clarify this point.

Special maths exam offers Leaving

Students who achieve the points for undergraduate engineering degree courses at NUI Galway but do not have the maths requirement have a second chance, thanks to a special annual maths examination being offered by the university on Wednesday August 19.

It has provided this facility for more than 20 years to help applicants who did not achieve the required grade C3 or better in higher level mathematics. Students who took lower level maths in the Leaving Certificate may also apply for the exam. Students who pass it will be deemed to have satisfied the maths requirement and if they have the necessary points, will receive an additional CAO offer at Round 2.

Fine Gael bill to stop supermarket giants creaming profits

A new Fine Gael bill due to be published this week is expected to tackle the practice of ‘hello money’ which has helped supermarket giants and meat factories cream a disportionate level of profits on milk, beef, and sheep meat.

Fine Gael Galway East Deputy Paul Connaughton said this week that the new bill will “outlaw what is termed as ‘hello money’” and thereby prevent supermarkets from prising large sums of cash from suppliers who compete with each other to get a foothold for their products on the supermarket shelves. He said that the farming community could not understand why there has been no intervention by the Government.

Volunteer centre gets busier despite downturn

Galway Volunteer Centre has reported an exceptionally busy first half of 2009, with over 1,000 members of the public registering for the first time to use the service. It has been the busiest six months for the centre since it opened in July 2006 and it is now one of the three busiest volunteer centres in Ireland.

The centre now has over 2,600 volunteers on its books and has advertised over 600 vacancies for organisations.
