Archives Conference 2012 takes place next month

The second annual Galway International Heritage Conference takes place in The Harbour Hotel, The Docks, on Thursday October 4 with the theme being ‘Archives: Celebrating Ireland’s Archival Heritage’.

A range of speakers will address the conference. Catriona Crowe of the National Archives of Ireland will speak on ‘Archives and Society’. Dr Raymond Gillespie, NUI Maynooth, will give a talk entitled ‘Why Archives Matter’.

A new series Ballach, Bradán agus Bairneach about the developments in the fishing industry in Galway Bay over the last 200 years will start this week on RnaG as part of the station’s autumn schedule, which also sees the western magazine programme Iris Aniar extended to almost two hours.

Ballach, Bradán agus Bairneach, presented by former head of Raidió na Gaeltachta Tomás Mac Con Iomaire, will examine the changes in the fishing industry in Galway Bay from Famine times until now.

The Galway Comedy Festival, which was launched last night in the Róisín Dubh, runs from Wednesday October 24 to Monday 29, feature leading Irish and international comics, improv, theatre, mime, a table quiz, a very special dinner show, photography, hip hop, and soccer commentary.

A ‘Plan B’ is urgently needed on the Galway City Outer Bypass as the chances of the project getting the green light from the Europe Court of Justice are “only 50-50”, according to a Government TD.

Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh is warning stakeholders in the outer bypass to prepare alternative plans for such a roadway following discussions with EU officials and legal representatives.
