Organised criminals involved in the illegal laundering of fuel will find it harder to offload their illicit product onto the market, due to new measures to be introduced by the Revenue Commissioners in the New Year, according to Jim Higgins MEP, the sole Irish member of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee.

At the start of this year, we knew that Galway would for a short while anyway, attract the eyes of the world; that the name of the city would feature across the pages of the top newspapers, that it might just grab a few minutes at obscure hours for sports-mad insomniacs. We knew that the city would be the location for an event that would make headlines — up until November, we thought that this would be the Volvo Ocean Race, but it was not to be.

For all the wrong reasons, the name of Galway is known across the globe this winter and you can be sure this will continue into the new year as the country moves towards abortion legislation and the political and social turmoil this will entail.

Barna Waste composting centre to create ten jobs

Barna Waste has announced the planned opening of its regional composting centre at the Headford Road with the creation of 10 jobs. The new €6 million facility is the largest composting site in Connacht and is authorised to cater for up to 40,000 tonnes of waste annually. Initial weekly volumes of brown bin waste handled on site will be the equivalent of composting the annual food waste produced by a town of 4,000 inhabitants.
