Eight GMIT students, four students' union staff, and the head of marketing and international relations for GMIT, Dr Larry Elwood, have raised more than €5,000 for the Make a Wish Foundation by completing a 10,000ft skydive at the Irish Parachute Club, Edenderry, Co Offaly.
In near perfect diving conditions, the GMIT skydivers took to the air over the midlands county intent on making the season of goodwill special for a sick child. Organised by GMIT Wishmakers on Campus, the event’s aim was to grant the wish of a child living with a life threatening condition by sending him/her to Lapland this Christmas.
Antoinette Canavan of GMIT Students’ Union said: “We would like to thank all who supported the skydive, and gave so generously to this very worthy cause. GMIT Wishmakers on Campus was formed in September 2012 by GMIT students along with students’ union staff, and works on an on-going basis to help Make-A-Wish Ireland in their efforts to grant wishes to children living with life threatening medical conditions.”
Larry Elwood of GMIT added: “Once again I would like to compliment the students union staff and students on this wonderfully generous initiative. The Make-A-Wish Ireland Foundation does tremendous work in helping children and the amount raised will go some way towards making this Christmas truly memorable for some child. To all those who sponsored the group I would like to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’”.
