Positive Mental Health Foundation annual BBQ

Positive Mental Health Foundation’s 10th Anniversary Summer BBQ takes place this Saturday in The Clybaun Hotel at 7.15pm and will raise funds for the foundation’s work.

The barbecue will have food and music by the Broken Road band. Funds raised from the event will enable the PMHF’s services to continue in its provision of secondary schools mental and emotional wellbeing programme.

Situation at UCHG accident and emergency department described as ‘utter chaos’

The situation which unfolded at UCHG’s accident and emergency unit last week has been described as “utter chaos” by a man left waiting with his chronically ill wife for more than 24 hours.

The man, who identified himself as Patrick, was left stunned by the scenes that greeted him on his arrival at the unit. His wife was one of 50 people to be left waiting for treatment in the hallways and waiting room of the A and E department at the beginning of the week.

Galway woman with rare disease feels let down by the health system

Barbra McDonagh describes how she lives in constant pain which affects every part of her body. Ms McDonagh, who is originally from Ballinfoyle but now lives in Cork, feels completely let down by our health service. She has been displaying symptoms of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome since she was six months old but, shockingly was only diagnosed by her GP last August, at the age of 38. Furthermore, she had to travel to London for an official diagnosis in April because there is no EDS specialist in Ireland.

A charity table quiz, to raise funds for ISPCC, the Special Olympics Ireland, and the National Youth Foundation takes place on Tuesday July 21 at 8pm at the Loft at Seven, Bridge Street.

Galway women Katie O'Neill and Aoife O'Flynn are taking part in the 15km Tour de Picnic run in September to raise money for the charities. "These charities have seen recent cuts in government funding and have become hugely reliant on donations," said O'Neill. "It is important to support them so they can continue their great work."

Swim ban at Grattan Beach

A swimming ban was put in place at Grattan Beach yesterday following the discovery of intestinal bacteria in a sample taken recently.

Routine sampling on Monday found the intestinal bacteria E coli and intestinal enterococci in the water, and ‘do not swim’ notices were placed at the beach when results became available yesterday.

Moycullen devastated following death of local teenager in Croatia

Efforts are being made to repatriate the body of a young Moycullen man, who tragically drowned while on holidays in Croatia, within the coming days. Eamon Buckley from Gortahalla entered the water off the coast of Split in the early hours of Monday morning. The accident occurred at the city’s main harbour, when the young man fell off a yacht and hit his head. The alarm was immediately raised by friends and a full search was launched by local emergency services. Mr Buckley’s body was recovered at around 10am on Tuesday.

Ryan Institute project will see books penned by local children reach global audiences

An NUI Galway Ryan Institute project will see 20 children’s books, written and illustrated by this year’s sixth class students of Galway Educate Together National School, reach global audiences through the EcoScience Writers in Schools project. 

The goal of this unique project was to create a set of fun and informative teaching resources by supporting the students to write a story for their younger peers on an environmental subject of their choosing. The class chose to write about creatures of the North Atlantic Ocean, incorporating facts into their fictional prose, in a way that is both entertaining and educational.
