The new Economic Baseline Study, produced for Galway city and county, will be "invaluable over the coming months" to both the Galway city and county councils as they "set down the future direction for economic development" across Galway.
This is the view of Cllr Peter Roche, Cathaoirleach of County Galway, who was speaking at the launch of the Economic Baseline Study, carried out by The Whitaker Institute in NUI Galway on behalf of the Galway City Council and Galway County Council. Cllr Roche added that the study will also be "critical in the preparation of the Local Economic and Community Plans and the LEADER programme" both councils are involved in preparing.
The study collates all available information relating to socio-economic indicators in Galway and provides a comprehensive snapshot of the city and county in relation its demographic base. Two high-level summaries, one for City Hall and one for County Buildings, have been produced, while a website, www.galwaydashboard.ie, has been developed. As background documents, reviews were prepared outlining the strengths, opportunities, and recommendations for the marine, agriculture, education, medtech, ICT, food, tourism, retail and creative sectors in Galway.
“Galway City Council aims to position Galway as a world-class city of innovation and creativity," said Brendan McGrath, chief executive of the Galway City Council, who was also speaking at the launch. "We are actively working on a number of strategies that will guide our vision for Galway over the next few years and the Economic Baseline Study will help inform these strategies."
Mr McGrath is also encouraging groups, organisations and individuals to become involved in the public consultation on the Economic Baseline Study "to ensure everyone has their say on the future development of our city and count".
