You can never do too much for Galway Hospice

Thu, Jul 02, 2015

You can never do too much for Galway Hospice. Never. Ever. No donation is ever too big. Ever. You could get your granny, stick a price tag on her, photograph her, put her on eBay and it still wouldn't be too big a gesture. You could wait for your team to get to an All-Ireland final and you could raffle your tickets and give the money to the Hospice and it still wouldn’t be too big. You could walk naked up The Reek using slippers made out of porcupines and a thong knitted from the roughest wool of the rarest goat and if you said you were doing it for Galway Hospice, nobody would dare say you were mad. They’d nod, and say ‘fair play to ya. Mighty cause, mighty.”

There is no gesture that would ever be considered over the top when it comes to helping out Galway Hospice because what they do is so bloody brilliant and essential. When you're sick and shocked and helpless and faced with the enormity of a life-changing illness, there is nothing so wonderfully magical and humbling as the unsolicited kindness of strangers. And they are strangers merely because they are people you will hope you will never meet, but when they come into your life and your home and your family, they become some of the best friends you will ever have.

No Country for Old Men

Thu, Jul 02, 2015

In theory, home is where we all should feel the safest. It should be a refuge for all of us lucky to have a place to call home. It is the place where you can truly be yourself, far away from the pretence of modern life where, as characters in the great play of life, you learn your lines and your role before you walk out each day to act out your part.

I am often reminded of the image of Padraig Nally, in the months and years before the incident that changed his life, sitting there in the dark of night, listening to the wind coming through the trees that line the road to his house, cocking an ear for any deviation from the norm, his heartbeat quickening at any detection of disturbance in the lonely darkness. His ease returning only when eventually, the dawn arrived to throw a sheath of brightness over the land.

Councillors unhappy about the online publication of farmers’ CAP payments

Thu, Jul 02, 2015

A number of county councillors have expressed unhappiness about a new policy whereby the details of farmers’ grants from Europe are being published online. This follows new EU regulations, which required details of all payments made to Common Agriculture Policy beneficiaries in 2014 to be published by member states. Some €1.8 billion was paid to 130,000 farmers and rural enterprises nationwide under CAP schemes last year.

At last week’s local authority meeting, Connemara councillor Seosamh Ó Cualáin tabled a motion objecting to the publication of the payments in future. He said this detail being available online was posing a huge security risk to farmers. “Any of us can go on this website and find out what farmers in the county are getting from the EU, and it is not fair. This information does not pertain to anybody else. It is not right that others know what farmers living in rural areas are earning. This is only playing into the hands of criminals.”
