Tuam farmer introduces rare breed of bull to Galway market

A Tuam farmer has taken ownership of a 100 per cent fullblood Wagyu bull. It is believed that this may be the first bull of this particular breed to cross the River Shannon into Galway. It is estimated that there are no more than 10-15 fullblood Wagyu bulls working in Ireland in total.

There is only one topic on the lips of every Galway hurling supporter since the team put in the performance of the season last Sunday to plunder the All Ireland semi-final and transport every fan into a state of ecstasy not experienced for many a year.
Now the rush is on to secure a coveted ticket to the final on September 6, and Galway County Board has issued a warning that it will not be able to meet the demand, and fans must seek tickets from outside the county. County board chairman Noel Treacy says he does not think the call for tickets was ever as frantic before. “The performance has really galvanised the support. My mobile phone has been ringing off the hook every day since Sunday. There are days where I have had to charge it three times it has rung so much! It has just been manic.’’

It was just a few seconds but it seemed like an eternity. The gap between the winning point and the final whistle last Sunday. It was just enough time for a large hand to go through through your ribcage, grab your heart and shake it all about. That shrill of a whistle unleashed a primal scream within all Galway people. Yes, it was just the semifinal. Yes, nothing has been won. Yet. But it was the culmination of a summer of hope, of a quarter-century of hope that one day, that hope might turn to reality. Within minutes of the whistle, we posted this picture of Anthony Cunningham up on our social media. It was a pic that summed up the feeling and passion of every Galway supporter. That on a difficult afternoon when defeat could so easily have been the outcome, when your dreams were kicked and dashed and then reignited, that perseverance and heroism paid off and a final place was secured.

Two Galway acts have made it through to the final of a competition set up for tweens and teen presenters to showcase their presenting skills with a pal, for a chance to win a once in a lifetime prize.
Tuckatoos, the new savoury Irish snack brand, took to the roads this summer with ‘Tuckatoos Studio’ in the search for Ireland’s next double act. Twelve acts made the final shortlist, with the overall winning act receiving a trip to London to see the world’s biggest boyband One Direction.

Four Galway-born first cousins are climbing Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, in aid of the Alan Kerins Project. Alan’s sister Miriam Kerins, along with cousins Aoife Lynskey-Keane, Brenda Kerins, and Martina Kerins will take part in the Caps to the Summit challenge this September. The four are hoping to raise €10,000 for the worthy cause which supports community and youth leadership development projects in Zambia.

Do you have a friend or family member from Galway city or county who is now living and working overseas? Or are you a former Galway native reading this from your adopted home abroad? If so, Dúchas na Gailllimhe – Galway Civic Trust wants to hear from you. The heritage organisation is launching an initiative entitled The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project which aims to collect and record the stories of former Galway residents who have gone on to carve out careers or life stories beyond Irish shores.
Project co-ordinator Michael Quinn explains the concept behind the initiative. “The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project seeks to compile pen-portraits of people who previously lived in Galway but have who have moved away from Ireland in order to establish new lives, careers, or opportunities. For centuries Galway people have emigrated to locations all around the world for a variety of reasons, and for many of those their personal stories have been lost. This exciting new venture gives us the opportunity to redress that by connecting with our diaspora and recording their unique stories and experiences.’’
