Aran survey of spoken Irish to be launched in city tomorrow

Former NUI Galway Registrar and Deputy President, Professor Nollaig Mac Congáil will launch Dr SéamAs Ó Direáin’s A Survey of Spoken Irish in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway on Friday, 9 October at 1.30pm in Áras na Gaeilge, NUI Galway.

Created over a period of 25 years, A Survey of Spoken Irish in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway represents the life’s work of Californian linguist Dr Séamas Ó Direáin, whose grandparents emigrated from Inis Mór to Boston over 100 years ago. Dr Ó Direáin, who turns 77 this October, first started learning Irish from expats in Kenya in the 1970s where he was researching African languages. Over 40 years later, he is delighted to make his Survey available for free and online from 9 October.

Together the two Credit Unions have been working together on a number of projects to ensure a consistent, reliable service for their membership and joined forces to put themselves forward for the award which is the culmination of both continuous training and evaluation of Member Service which took place over a period of a number of months. The evaluation involved an independent ‘Mystery Shopping’ assessment of branches in person and via telephone which assessed a number of criteria including the member service experience, ambience and atmosphere, layout of offices, website, social media engagement as well as the all-important, staff friendliness and helpfulness.

A lifetime of hard graft has resulted in the building of a successful shop, post-office, filling station, and hardware business which is now operated by their two sons Anthony and Sean. Councillors motion prevents use of airport for Aran air service

Surgery for special needs child cancelled on several occasions

A child with special needs who is waiting on an operation at University Hospital Galway has had it cancelled on a number of occasions.

Fianna Fail councillor Mary Hoade raised the issue at a meeting of the Regional Health Forum West this week. She said it was “not fair” to keep cancelling the surgery, especially at the last minute. Her family learned of the cancellation on some occasions the night before.

Executive Helicopters says choppers are transport of choice for many islands

Executive Helicopters have released a statement to address the ongoing issue regarding air transport to and from the Aran Islands. The company says helicopters are already the mainstay and air transport of choice to many offshore islands in open ocean conditions and give the example of the Tory Island service off Donegal coast, which has been operating since 1985 and is part-funded by the Department of the Gaeltacht. 

In relation to the comments that aeroplanes are able to operate in worse weather conditions than helicopters for the Aran islands PSO air service, the company says “airplanes  are not permitted by law to operate in worse weather than helicopters for this route. Aeroplanes require a minimum visibility of almost twice (1,500m) that required by a helicopter (800m) to operate to the relevant airports.’’

Oranmore medical practice to open in new premises next week

After eight successful years Dr David Hanney, Dr Catherine O’Mahony, Dr Lorna Joyce and Dr Dan Delaney are moving from their thriving practice in the Orantown Centre to a recently renovated building on the Dublin Road, Oranmore. The new premises are strategically located just off the Oranbeg roundabout and comprises of 4000 sq feet with 13 consultation rooms.  The new premises are modern, spacious and very accessible. 

Dr David Hanney commenced practice in Oranmore in 2003 and was joined shortly afterwards by Dr Catherine O’Mahony. Dr Lorna Joyce joined the practice in 2013. Dr Dan Delaney will be with the practice until April 2016. Nurse Marie Smith is due to join the team in mid October.
