Flooding situation still critical in Cahermore

Cahermore, the small townland located between Labane and Kinvara has been very much in the news this week due to the construction of a channel in the area which could potentially have a huge effect on future flooding in South Galway. The channel, which was dug last week following the go-ahead from Galway Couty Council, is almost three miles long and runs from Cahermore to the sea. It has been critical in ensuring that a huge number of homes in the surrounding area have been spared from going under water.

Two of the world’s best known mountaineers are visiting Galway this week. Guinness World Record holders, brothers Mingma and Pasang Sherpa, have between them climbed Mount Everest a total of 28 times, while Mingma Sherpa was the first Nepalise man to reach the summit of K2. The Sherpas hail from a renowned climbing family which consists of seven brothers who have climbed Everest a combined total of 54 times

Galway astronomers solve the mystery of flares from the Crab Nebula

The Centre for Astronomy at the School of Physics in NUI Galway are the lead researchers and authors of a recent international study published this week in one of the world’s leading primary research journals in astronomy and astrophysics, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS).

A joint Irish-French-US set of observations have led to a better understanding of the unexpected flaring activity seen coming from the Crab supernova remnant. The project led by Irish astronomer Professor Andrew Shearer from the Centre of Astronomy at NUI Galway, involved using the NUI Galway developed, Galway Astronomical Stokes Polarimeter (GASP) polarimeter on the 200” Palomar telescope in California. Their work for the first time tied together changes in the optical polarisation with apparent changes in the gamma-ray (high energy x-ray) polarisation.

Judge Mary Fahy to preside over reopening of Oughterard Courthouse

The renovated Oughterard Courthouse will be officially reopened tomorrow (Friday), exactly eight years after it closed its doors to court service.

Judge Mary Fahy, who was the last to preside over court hearings at the venue, will carry out the official opening of the refurbished courthouse. When she adjourned a District Court sitting on January 8, 2008, due to its cold and damp conditions, it signalled the end of its use as a courthouse.

NUI Galway and the Galway Clinic form medical education partnership

NUI Galway recently announced that the Galway Clinic will now be recognised as an affiliated teaching hospital of the University. The partnership between both institutions will offer clinical placement opportunities to final year Medical Students in the Galway Clinic as part of their final year Training Programme at NUI Galway. Student nurses from the University currently fulfil part of their degree course training in the Galway Clinic.
