Young Scientist success for Merlin College

Ian McDonagh wins award at BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition

Ian McDonagh, a second year student from Coláiste Mhuirlinne/Merlin College, Doughiska, was awarded second place in the Junior Individual Category of the Biological and Ecological Sciences at the prestigious BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

The exhibition was held in the RDS last weekend and this was the school’s first time to enter the competition. Ian's project investigated if there was a correlation between the phases of the lunar cycle and equine birth patterns. Anecdotal evidence points to a link between the full moon and mares’ foaling. The dates of birth of more than 250 foals were compiled and cross referenced against the lunar calendar for the year. However, Ian’s research contradicted his original hypothesis and he now intends to conduct further research on his findings.

Speaking following the announcement, Coláiste Mhuirlinne principal John Cleary said he was “absolutely delighted for Ian and his teachers on such an achievement. It is a testimony to all the hard work that has taken place through the various science/ maths/ IT activities that have been established since the school began only three years ago.”
