There’s something strange about being alone in a library in the dead in night, when everyone has gone home; the ‘librarial’ silence is even more silent, the expectant hum of a noiseless space long extinguished, the flapping of a turned page no longer a possibility. That sort of silence. Dead silence.

And in the dark of night if you walk along the shelves and shelves of books and run your finger along their jackets, nothing inappropriate, just light touches of affection, you can swear that the books almost breathe. You can hear them heave, slowly, exhausted from another day of knowledge sharing. Another day of feeding the minds of those who come in with their palate for knowledge held out like a young Oliver Twist looking for more.

Gardai recover artwork stolen from Kiltullagh Church

Gardai have recovered six oil paintings which were stolen from a church in Kiltullagh in 2013. The specially commissioned paintings by Dublin-born artist Evie Hone were part of a set of 14 Stations of the Cross estimated to be worth about €500,000. Following the robbery at St Peter and Paul's Church, Crimestoppers offered a reward for any information leading to the recovery of the stolen artwork.

Boost for Oranmore as funding secured for local roads

Galway County Council is to begin permanent reinstatement of roads in Oranmore next week following infrastructure works carried out in the village over the last few months.

This announcement has been welcomed by local councillor Martina Kinane. “There will be some road closures necessary to complete these works but they will be of a short duration. I am awaiting the plan from the contractor and Galway County Council which is currently being agreed.”

NUI Galway study on spider venom for potential anti-cancer properties

An NUI Galway scientist has begun research on venom variations from the false black widow spider and its therapeutic potential for anti-cancer properties. The venom will be tested on different lines of human cancerous cells.
