This Sunday April 10 DADS Dunmore will perform Tom Murphy’s The Gigli Concert in An Taibhdhearc. DADS are in the middle of a run on the amateur drama circuit and have met with considerable success, winning numerous acting, production, and directorial awards and most notably winning Best Overall Play (Open and Confined ) in the Western Drama Festival in Tubbercurry.
Tom Murphy is Ireland’s greatest living playwright and The Gigli Concert is widely considered to be his masterpiece. The play centres around JPW King, an Englishman living in Dublin and a practitioner of Dynamotology, a dubious form of modern therapy based on psychological and philosophical principles in which even JPW himselfseems to have little faith.
Into his chaotic existence steps a mysterious and troubled client identified only as Irishman, who yearns to sing like the legendary Italian opera singer Beniamino Gigli. In between the men’s sessions, we encounter JPW’s unattainable love Helen; his trysts with his lover Mona.
As the drama evolves and erupts, epic forces at work alter the characters’ lives. Following his powerful directorial debut for DADS last year with Frank McGuinness’ Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, Philip Macdonnell once again has a stellar and multiple award-winning cast of Martin Silke, Ollie Turner and Joan Walkin at his disposal.
This is a unique occasion to celebrate the very best of Tom Murphy,Tuam’s own literary giant. Tickets available from An Taibhdhearc (091-563600 ). Curtain at 8pm.
