COPE Galway has welcomed Budget 2017 as being broadly positive and encouraging with the focus on housing and addressing homelessness, with a commitment to provide €1.2 billion for the implementation of the Housing Action Plan; an additional €105 million towards the expansion of the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) Scheme and an additional €28 million towards emergency homeless accommodation are all measures welcomed by the local charity.

Budget 2017 “will not make any significant difference” in providing better rural services and infrastructure, and at best only offers rural communities the, “crumbs from the rich man’s table”.
This is the view of Galway West TD and spokesperson on Regional, Rural, Gaeltacht & Island Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív, despite the fact his party will be supporting the minority Government’s Budget through Dáil Éireann.

If I were an alien that had just arrived on earth from another planet and read the Talking Politics article in last week’s Galway Advertiser entitled “Repealing the Eighth and the right to autonomy over ones’ own body,” I’m sure I would be marching on the Dáil in an effort to repeal the “draconian laws” you describe in this article. However I am not and I would like to point out a number of flaws in the article.

One of my favorite Baboró memories is Paper World. Everyone got to go up on stage and we started having a paper fight with some of the actors. We tore down all the paper on the set and threw it at each other. It was a lot of fun. I don’t think you get to do that at other festivals, that’s why Baboró is so great.

More than 1,300 households on the housing waiting list risk being struck off under a new social housing needs assessment currently being carried out, Independent city councillor Mike Cubbard has warned.
The Galway City Council has been carrying out a social housing needs assessment of all those on the current housing waiting list. The assessment is to ascertain if the estimated 4,700 households still require social housing. Households who have been on the list for more than 12 months, were contacted by City Hall’s Housing Department by letter earlier this year, with 3,482 letters sent out. Any new applicants - those on the list for under a year - are exempt from the process.

This award winning documentary, narrated by Brendan Gleeson, looks at the impact of super trawlers, sucking enormous quantities of fish from the ocean, on long established fishing communities. It also looks at the effects of overfishing and the oil industry on a fragile marine environment. Screening starts at 8.15pm and the director will be in attendance.
