More than 15,000 people a year are having to wait nine hours or longer at the UHG Emergency Department before being admitted to hospital or discharged, a situation a Galway TD has described as "unacceptable".
Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish, who has raised the issue in the Dáil, has called on An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to open a minor injuries unit at Merlin Park Hospital to relieve the overcrowding at UHG - regardless of the proposed plans to build a new ED at the city hospital.

NUI Galway's Professor Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh has received an honorary degree from the National University of Ireland for his contribution to Irish history, the Irish language and Irish public life.
Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, who is the professor emeritus in history, was conferred with a D Litt by the chancellor of the University, Dr Maurice Manning, at an honorary conferring ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Sixty pupils from third to sixth class in Northampton National School, Kinvara, have contributed to Across An Open Field is the first Irish history book written and illustrated by children.
Children from the school were supported in their research by teachers Shane McDonagh, Róisín Forde, and Orla McHale, writer Mary Branley, and artist Ann Donnelly. They explored family histories and the role of blood relations during World War I, the 1916 Rising, and the War of Independence. The book was launched in Northampton National School by Fine Gael Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon this week.
