Annaghdown ladies team to be honoured with civic reception

Councillors hail club's 'fantastic achievement' in winning All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate Club

A civic reception to honour Annaghdown's "fantastic achievement" in winning the All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate Club championship, will be held in County Buildings in Galway city in the New Year.

On Sunday, Annaghdown defeated Armagh's Shane O’Neills 1-13 to 3-5 at Parnell Park in Dublin to claim the title, leading to huge celebrations in the town later that night.

Speaking at yesterday's meeting of the Galway County Council, Fianna Fáil's councillor Mary Hoade proposed the civic reception in light of the team's triumph. She congratulated the team, particularly veteran footballer Niamh Duggan, a 2004 All-Ireland senior medallist with Galway, and Mary Kate Killilea, noting how former pupils of "all four primary schools in the parish were represented on the team".

Independent councillor James Charity, who was at the match, called Annaghdown's victory a "fantastic achievement". He said: "This is the first time the parish, at senior level, has won a senior title. Each and every one of the team put in a fantastic effort throughout the campaign."

Fine Gael's councillor Peter Keaveney noted how "ladies football is often the poor relation to the men's game", but he said he hoped Annaghdown's victory was a "great credit to the county" and would "hopefully help promote" and encourage more women to take part in ladies' football.

No date has yet been set for the civic reception, but a decision on that will be forthcoming from County Buildings.
