The Middle East has experienced unimaginable devastation since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. As in all wars, civilians are the innocent victims. In what was once one of the most modern countries in the region, it is estimated that 470,000 inhabitants have died since 2011, over 7.6 millions are internally displaced within Syria and over five million were forced to leave.

Whilst approximately one million are in Europe, most are living in the neighbouring countries of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. In spite of the severe strain on their societies and economies, these host nations have responded with amazing generosity and friendship.

Five water supplies in Co Galway have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) latest Remedial Action List (RAL) which was published this week.

The schemes are Ballyconnelly Public Supply, Carraroe Public Water Supply, Cleggan/Claddaghduff Water Supply, Kilconnell Public Water Supply, and Leenane Public Supply. This represents a significant investment by Irish Water in Co Galway which has been acknowledged by the EPA in their latest RAL update.

Rick Hanson, an eminent neuropsychologist, describes how the brain has a negativity bias designed to keep us safe rather than happy. An example of this negativity can be seen in how we often relate to ourselves with harsh attitudes of self-criticism. But a harsh self-critical inner voice can undermine our self-confidence and self- esteem and lead to feelings of guilt and shame that undermine our mental wellbeing. This often results in higher levels of stress, anxiety, and low mood.

The two parkrun events in Galway — Knocknacarra and Oranmore, are coming together tonight (Thursday Feb 2) to raise vital funds for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) — the portable medical device often found outside shopping centres and sports grounds, that along with CPR can increase the chance of a survival from a cardiac incident by 90 per cent.

“On a Saturday we have over 400 people running and walking at the events in Knocknacarra and Oranmore,” said Rob Partridge, Event Director for Knocknacarra parkrun, “and it’s only a matter of time before this piece of equipment is needed.
