75 per cent of eligible Galway women availed of cervical screening

Three out of four Galway women eligible for free cervical cancer screening availed of the potentially life saving service in 2014/2015, according to a new report. The county was one in which CervicalCheck - The National Cervical Screening Programme reported a high uptake rate (75 per cent) among its target population of women aged 25 to 60 years. The objective of the programme for coverage over five years remains at 80 per cent.

Gardai are investigating a series of burglaries which took place in the city and county over the last few weeks. Between 4.30pm and midnight on December 21, a house in Frenchpark, Oranmore, Co Galway was broken into and cash, jewellery and personal belongings were taken.

There is probably no more sentimntal song in the world than Robbie Burns ‘Auld Lang Syne’, traditionally sung at the conclusion of New Year gatherings in Scotland and around the world, especially in English-speaking countries.

As well as celebrating the New Year, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is widely used to symbolise other “endings/new beginnings” – including farewells, funerals, and other leavetakings. I have wept uncontrollably on occasions singing or even just hearing that evocative tune, and those words.
