Noble gesture to accompany the heroes out at sea

Thu, May 19, 2022

It goes without aying that we are all filled with admiration for those heroes who risk their lives so we may live ours. Our minds do not have to go far back to remember those who have died in the service of rescue on this side of the country.

Every night as we settle down, an army of people are on watch, at the readiness to be called into action. In this category, I include all members of the rescue and emergency services whose job it is to save lives, but whose bravery goes beyond this, as they risk life and limb in the fulfilment of their goals.

THOUGHT THE GLASS DARKLY

Thu, May 12, 2022

In late November 1623, John Donne, Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, fell ill, probably of typhus, or ‘spotted fever’, as it was called in his day. He was in his early 50s, a widower since the death of his beloved wife Anne in 1617, and the father of four daughters and a son, who carried his father’s name.

Donne had taken Holy Orders in the Church of England in 1615. He had done so reluctantly, and only after exhausting every other career path. As a young man, he had gained a reputation among a small circle of university graduates, fellow-poets, and would-be courtiers for his witty and erotic love poetry. Like dozens of other young men, he hung around the Royal Court in the hopes of coming to the attention of some ‘great man’ and so gaining a position that would lead to social and financial advancement.

Grealish calls for extension of reduced fares to all bus passengers in Galway

Thu, May 12, 2022

Deputy Noel Grealish has called on the Government to extend the recently announced 20 per cent reduction in bus fares to include City Direct, which operates services from Knocknacarra in the city.

“Since the recent 20 per cent cut in Bus Éireann fares, the difference in journey cost between the two companies is as much as 63 per cent,” the Independent Galway West TD said this week. “That is very unfair on all the people who live in areas serviced by City Direct but not by Bus Éireann — you are talking about huge tracts of the biggest suburb in the city.
