The annual Galway Bay Swim, for Cancer Care West, are delighted that the event, which took place on Saturday was a resounding success.
On arrival at Blackrock, Salthill, the tired but triumphant swimmers were greeted by a very animated crowd of over 1000 who cheered them on through those last hundred metres. The annual event, held in memory of Frances Thornton, is now one of the most important events on the Galway calendar.
It is not just not only for the spectacle it creates, but importantly it raises nearly €100k each year for cancer support services for West of Ireland patients and their families.
The organisers gratefully acknowledge that the event would not be possible without the support they receive from Oranmore Maree Coastal Rescue and Ciaran Oliver of Galway Bay Boats tours.
Organiser Brian Thornton said that special thanks of course goes to the swimmers themselves. This swim is a challenge and we are very grateful that so many sea swimmers are willing to do the training and then come and complete it each year. The amount of money they raise is just incredible and so important to Cancer Care West” It’s not too late to donate - check out http://www.galwaybayswim.com/ or on www.facebook.com/galwaybayswim
