Domestic Violence Response (DVR) is a Galway City and County based service that provides information services, telephone and counselling support, advocacy support and accompaniment and educational programmes to women impacted by domestic abuse. DVR also provides a range of educational training and awareness programmes to organisations, third level colleges, community groups, secondary schools.

As we begin a new year, Galway Simon Community remains deeply concerned about the housing and homelessness crisis, with their Services continuing to be very stretched to provide supports to the number of people coming to it in crisis, seeking help.

The most recent figures published by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government report 555 people staying or living in Emergency Accommodation in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in November 2022. The figures represent a 3% increase in the number of people in Emergency Accommodation in the West between November 2021 and 2022, significantly lower than the 27% increase nationally.

Sinn Fein TD Mairéad Farrell has called for urgent action to address the continued and damning failures in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) which were identified in a report by the Mental Health Commission.

The report revealed that some 140 children had been “lost”, receiving no follow up care for up to two years, including children who had been on anti-psychotic medication resulting in them being not properly monitored.

I suppose I am not unique in thinking that the times when I have been the most lonely in my life have not been solitary, but those when you are among crowds and invisible. It is the sensation you get in large cities, when you are invisible in plain view.

Societies by their nature have a way of sorting out who they want to engage with, discarding those who disinterest them. We all have a habit of looking through people, avoiding eye contact, not even offering people the courtesy of an acknowledgment of their existence. And everyone has their reasons for it.
