Rahan Mummers from Co Offaly retained their title as champions in the senior event at New Inn Mummers’ Festival last weekend, while Lackagh Junior Mummers were the big winners in the junior event.

Fine Gael appear to occupy a position in Galway city politics that Fianna Fáil and Labour must envy because the Blueshirts look set to emerge from the 2009 Local Elections without losing a seat.
Fianna Fáil know they will be lucky to hold what they have. Labour know they stand a great chance of making gains, but cannot be sure they will. FG has the advantage of knowing thier sitting councillors should stay put, but the party’s one dilemma is that they will find it very hard to pick up extra seats.

“Almost...but not quite” is how Galway Fianna Fáil might sum up its team for June’s Local Elections in both the city and county, with many candidates virtually certain to be selected, others still battling for a place, and the rest in the dark as to what party HQ intends to do with them.
What is the state of play in Galway city? In Galway City East the line up is virtually certain to be Cllr Michael J Crowe, Cllr Mary Leahy, and Sheila Mangan. Galway City Central and Galway City West however remain problematic areas.

The Pope’s children are 30. As 2009 dawns it will be 30 years since the Pope went around the Racecourse in Ballybrit and told the young people of Ireland that he loved them. But the young people at Ballybrit were not the Pope’s children. The young people of Ballybrit in 1979 are anything from 45 to 55 now. They were well able to cheer and clap and sing loudly in 1979. The Pope’s children are a different generation.

The absence of a tree preservation and replacement policy at the Galway City Council is of great concern and is detrimental to the city’s green enviroment.
That is the opinion of city councillor Catherine Connolly who said the recent decision by the council to cut down four mature beech and chestnut trees at the entrance to Wellpark Grove on the Monivea Road highlighted in a very acute way the absence of a tree preservation and/or replacement policy in the city.
