Less than one in 10 obey 30km city speed limit

Fewer than 10 per cent of motorists obey the 30km/h speed limit introduced by Dublin City Council last year, according to a new survey by Continental Tyres.

Carried out with the help of Tele-Traffic, suppliers of laser speedgun technology, the Continental Tyres survey found that only nine vehicles out of 100 surveyed were travelling at 30km/h or less. The highest speed recorded in the survey – which covered all vehicle types including cars, motor bikes, vans, trucks and buses – was a van travelling at 58km/h, nearly twice the permitted speed.

Essential driver training now compulsory

Starting this week, learner drivers must take compulsory lessons as part of a new licensing system.

The new Essential Driver Training programme has been introduced since Monday, and is one of a range of measures announced by the Road Safety Authority last September. It forms part of a new Graduated Driver Licensing system aimed to enhance the way drivers are trained, tested and licensed in Ireland.

The Ford Focus has been Ireland’s best-selling car of the past 10 years, and the new model just launched will be even more attractive to buyers. The company has announced that all new models will come with three years free road tax. A new Focus bought by the end of March will have road tax covered until March 2014.

The offer applies across the Focus range, starting with the three-door Focus Style 1.6 TDCi, available from €21,475 ex-works or €16,334 with scrappage. The model comes with a good standard specification, including air conditioning, 16” alloy wheels, front fogs lights, Quickclear windscreen, and Bluetooth voice control.
