Sabor at Corry’s Food Hall, Loughrea

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

Over the years Loughrea has not had many new cafés/restaurants, and now in the space of less than six months, I visited a third new venture. The Corry family has had a butcher’s business in Loughrea for many years and just two years ago they made the brave move to a new architect-designed building beside the old railway station. The café is situated on an open mezzanine upstairs and is now producing some really good food. Like several places I talked about recently, it is on its third incarnation, the new head chef and proprietor Nigel along with his wife Magaly at front of house, has I believe got the right formula and range of products.

Notes for the season

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

While certain things in life take time and patience to achieve, like improving the texture of your skin, reaching your ideal body weight, or growing out a bad fringe, others can be achieved through quick (but planned) fixes.

If you suffer from blue or purple bags under your eyes, look no further than MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 concealer. It disguises imperfections, protects skin from the sun, and provides antioxidants and silica to absorb extra oil. Concealer really should be every girl’s best friend.

Headache and migraine

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used to relieve headaches and migraines for thousands of years.

In traditional Chinese medicine, there are many causes of headaches or migraine, such as rising of liver yang (stress and emotional problems), blood deficiency (failure of enough blood to nourish the head correctly: dizziness, palpitations, and tiredness), and blood stagnation (always occurs in patients with a history of external injury). By using the natural remedies, traditional Chinese medicine can treat headache and migraine by using acupuncture, acupressure, and herbal medicine, which can calm the liver yang, normalise the yin blood, and disperse blood stasis. It is regarded as the ideal way to root out the causes of the problem.

Cosmetic trends

Thu, Mar 24, 2011

If you ever want to know what the very latest trends in cosmetics are, swing by the MAC counter in Brown Thomas. New on counter at the minute is the Wonder Woman collection, complete in comic book style packaging. It includes the supersized mineralised skin finish, eyeshadows, lipsticks, and powder blushers. Readers of this column will not be at all surprised to know my favourite item in this collection is the Reflex Glitter, in pearl and bronze. Though a plain and simple girl in most ways, and already owning four Bobbi Brown shimmer brinks, I could not resist this glitter. I tend to think glitter has mystical powers and improves all circumstances. This one is unreal. It can be used over a creamy eye shadow to add dimension or over cream blush to highlight. The sparkles practically dance on the skin, I love it. If you are baring your shoulders you can dust it over the tops of your arms (when a MAC make up artist suggests you to go sparingly, you know you may have gone a bridge to far with it in the past).
