The scholarship programme is open to international protection applicants, refugees, Irish Travellers, and vulnerable immigrant groups, and is part of a broader effort by the university as a designated University of Sanctuary to widen participation among underrepresented groups.

GMIT has an international reputation for offering industry-relevant courses to the tourism industry since opening in 1972, so it may come as no surprise to hear that the institute's Galway International Hotel School has been listed by global publication The Education Magazine as one of the top 10 hospitality management institutes worldwide.
The school was the first higher education institute in Ireland to offer a degree in hotel management in 1977, and since then it has grown to offer courses in culinary ars and gastronomy, international hotel management, heritage studies, international tourism management, and event management and public relations.

The French Institute is Galway’s French language school located in the Bridge Mills since 2005. It has an excellent reputation thanks to the dedication of its teachers who are qualified native speakers with extensive teaching experience.
All secondary school classes have successfully continued during the Covid-19 confinement, through video-conferencing. Students’ feedback is very positive, and many have asked the institute to run similar courses in August.

Dr Emer McGrath of NUI Galway has been awarded a clinician scientist fellowship as part of the Health Research Board (HRB) €3.7 million investment in 12 new health research fellowships. Dr McGrath was awarded €655,524 for her research into blood-based biomarkers for early detection of preclinical neurocognitive disorders.

One of the most rewarding feelings a person can experience is that of knowing you are helping people to better themselves. This is exactly the feeling I myself experienced every Tuesday during the college year after completing my hour of reading with the children of fourth class at a primary school in Galway city. Being able to play a part in a child’s education, especially during his/her formative years, is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. Knowing that I am helping these children, many of whom do not receive reading support at home or have little access to resources such as books to develop their education and enhance their reading abilities, is definitely a privilege.

This online diploma provides an interdisciplinary introduction to Irish life and culture from the Pagan Celtic world and the coming of Christianity, through to the establishment of the State and the new millennium from the perspectives of archaeology, history, literature, political science and sociology, and Irish music and dance.
Programme director Dr Michelle Comber said: “For anyone with a deep interest in Irish culture this is the ideal starting point, especially those without access to traditional courses in this area.”
