Cinema review: A Quiet Place

Films Reviews Thu, Apr 12, 2018

A QUIET Place is directed by John Krasinski, who most people will know as Jim from The Office, but do not let that fool you - there are no fourth wall breaking smirks to the camera here.

Cinema review: Isle Of Dogs

Films Reviews Thu, Apr 05, 2018

DIRECTOR WES Anderson is on a bit of a roll. His last two films, Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, have been among his best work, but I was a little disappointed at his decision to step back into stop motion animation.

FOLLOWING THE amazing and positive reviews Black Panther, Marvel's latest film, has been receiving, I decided to go and see it for myself, and it is a visually astounding film, very intriguing, and surprisingly deep.

Cinema review: Happy Death Day

Films Reviews Mon, Oct 23, 2017

HAPPY DEATH Day is billed as Scream meets Groundhog Day, which is a great idea. The Groundhog Day motif worked really well in 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and in an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It is a concept that lends itself well to a slasher movie.

Cinema review: The Snowman

Films Reviews Mon, Oct 16, 2017

WITH 2008's Let The Right One In, director Tomas Alfredson made one of the best film I have ever seen - a hauntingly powerful vampire film which has since been remade for an American audience and turned into a stage play.

Cinema Review: Blade Runner 2049

Films Reviews Mon, Oct 09, 2017

BLADE RUNNER 2049 is the sequel to 1982 classic Blade Runner. The 2049 is the year the sequel is set. So, don't worry, you haven’t missed Blade Runner the other 2047 sequels. Am I the first person to make that joke? Probably.

Cinema review: Deadpool

Films Reviews Mon, Feb 15, 2016

IN DEVELOPMENTAL hell for more than 10 years, the Deadpool movie is finally released. A cult favourite comic book anti-hero, this has been destined for the big screen since his inception, but with the success of Marvel's movies, aimed more at kids and young adults, it has been asked if there is a place for a comic book film targeted at the over 16s market alone?

Cinema review: Spotlight

Films Reviews Mon, Feb 01, 2016

THE SURPRISE of the year so far is Spotlight. Much like Room it is an uncomfortable topic that will be avoided by people but you should not avoid it (or Room for that matter). The film concentrates on the investigation run by the Boston Globe in 1999/2000, on the systematic abuse and ensuing cover-up by the Catholic church throughout the last century.

Cinema review: The Big Short

Films Reviews Mon, Jan 25, 2016

TRYING TO get your head around the subprime mortgage bubble can be hard. I was under the impression virtually no one came away making any money and it was an all around disaster. The anger comes at the greed and the negligence of the big banks but it's hard to accuse organisation's which acted maliciously.

Cinema review: Creed

Films Reviews Mon, Jan 18, 2016

THE IDEA of a return to the Rocky saga for a seventh film after the disaster of Rocky V and the awkward embarrassment of Rocky VI is a surprise. The franchise is a bit antiqued, especially with how cheesy it became in later installments. But this is the first Rocky movie not written by Sylvester Stallone and that is a very good thing.

Cinema review:- Legend

Films Reviews Mon, Sep 14, 2015

THE LATEST movie about the Kray twins, Legend, has been much hyped in the last few months, but it is all a bit of a let-down, concentrating only on a four year period and omitting the brothers rise to power in the east end of London.

Cinema review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Films Reviews Tue, Sep 08, 2015

DARKLY FUNNY and surprisingly profound, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s second feature is a real gem. If nothing else, it at least had my favourite film title of the year. It is a fresh take on this new wave of young adult weepies - The Fault In Our Stars, Now Is Good, and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. Flms in this subgenre have been more hit than miss but are we getting to a saturation point of watching beautiful young people die?

Cinema review: Straight Outta Compton

Films Reviews Mon, Aug 31, 2015

STRAIGHT OUTTA Compton is the story of the rise, and then fall, of rap’s first super group, N.W.A, the group that introduced gangster rap to the mainstream in the late 1980s. The film has been the surprise hit of the summer in the US and looks like it will be a huge success here too.

Cinema review: Fantastic Four

Films Reviews Mon, Aug 10, 2015

WHILE PIXAR'S latest, Inside/Out, could be the best film of the year, I have no doubt Fantastic Four WILL be the worst of 2015. It's rare you feel so cheated after spending money to see a film that is a miserable colourless mess with almost no redeeming qualities.
