The return of The Virginian

TG4 IS currently re-running the classic TV western series The Virginian and the show’s star James Drury - who played the title role throughout the show’s nine year run - has now come to Ireland to meet some of the show’s many fans, as well as his own Irish cousins.

On Monday morning in the Meyrick Hotel, Drury, wearing the obligatory black stetson, happily shared his memories of his time on The Virginian – and more besides.

Galway teens to perform at Edinburgh

Teen comedians from Galway’s Backstage Academy of Performing Arts will travel to Scotland next month to perform at the Edinburgh Festival.

The students will perform a show entitled Teen Comedy Improv, a combination of stand up and improvised comedy, for a teen audience, at St Augustine’s Studio, Edinburgh, from August 12 to 17.

Jeffrey Lewis - an indie Renaissance man

JEFFREY LEWIS is something of a Renaissance man - albeit in a very US indie kind of way. Raised in New York City he is a maker of comic books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock.

Jeffrey Lewis & The Jitters play the Róisín Dubh on Thursday August 7 at 9pm. The Jitters are Jeffrey’s brother Jack on bass and David Beauchamp on drums. Together they mix 1960s acoustic psychedelia with the experimental art-punk. Live shows also incorporate ‘low budget videos’ - ie, Jeff’s large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs.

The film’s opening sequence shows the career-driven Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) on a blind date, where she explains, “ Some women got pregnant, I got promoted. I want a baby now, I'm 37." Needless to say, her blind date rapidly flees the scene.
