Baby Mama

Two women, one apartment, and nine very eventful months. Baby Mama is a predictable comedy about a successful and single businesswoman whose plans of having a child are thrown when she discovers she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant. The film’s opening sequence shows the career-driven Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey ) on a blind date, where she explains, “ Some women got pregnant, I got promoted. I want a baby now, I'm 37." Needless to say, her blind date rapidly flees the scene.

Contemplating her other options, businesswoman Kate turns to a surrogate mother, and chooses high school dropout Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler ) as her unlikely candidate. The two are polar- opposites and when structured Kate moves Angie in and tries to turn her into the perfect expectant mum, the two disagree on everything from music to the type of food Angie should be eating.

The two main actresses in this lighthearted tale are not the usual Hollywood chick-flick stereotypes, which probably worked in their favour as the on-screen chemistry between them was amazing. Although the storyline had the potential to be brilliant, the script was quite weak in places and too soppy towards the end. But it still guarantees a lot of hysterical laughter - especially at comical scenes that include antics such as peeing in sinks, farting in a purse, and some questionable attempts at Playstation Singstar. The two women have a few comical encounters with a series of wacky characters, whose antics, while often funny, are nothing more than what’s expected from this type of movie.

If you enjoyed other pregnancy flicks like Juno, Waitress, and Knocked Up, then this will emerge somewhere near the top of your list of feel-good films.
