Red Bird to give a SAMPLE of youth creativity

RED BIRD, an up and coming youth-led arts organisation, will hold SAMPLE, an exhibition of its works, which opens in the Galway Arts Centre tomorrow at 6pm.

Red Bird members are aged between 15 and 22 and their interests range from fashion to creative writing, from journalism to acting, and from film to visual art. The group has been working with Galway artist Louise Manifold since September 2011, who has assisted and guided the group in its creative work.

LATIN AMERICAN, Malaysian, African, and Balkan styles of music will be the order of the day at The Havana Way night in Monroe’s Live on Friday May 11 at 9pm.

Performing on the night will be Baque Soul who play Brazilian soul-funk and samba, Latin grooves, and hip-hop. They are fronted by Mexican vocalist Susana Garcia and Brazilian street poet Juliana Duraes. The intensity of their live shows has earned them a reputation as a must see band.

AS PART of the Cúirt festival, the Nuns Island Theatre is hosting a theatrical double bill featuring work from two rising stars of today’s generation of playwrights - Stacy Gregg and Laura Wade.

In Gregg’s Perve, which is being staged by NUI Galway BA Connect, young film-maker Gethin (Sam Serry) is making a film on society’s behaviour toward paedophiles. He prompts his sister to start a schoolyard rumour about himself as a way of illustrating how accusations of sexual deviance can be fuelled as much by baseless hysteria as hard fact.

The classes are from 1pm to 2.30pm and will run for eight weeks. This popular class, which has been running for 17 years, is open to all, and beginners are particularly welcome. No previous acting experience is necessary.
