Lose your head with the Galway Sessions at The Kings Head

Now in its 11th year, The Galway Sessions is looking forward to an exciting June. As part of the event’s ongoing partnership with Stirling in Scotland, from June 11 to 17, the organisers are looking forward to welcoming back the Scots to the streets of Galway. Last year saw record crowds with over 15,000 in attendance, half of whom were from overseas.

The programme is as jam-packed as ever this year, especially at the King’s Head where patrons are advised to lose the head. Monday June 11 sees Orlaith Keane, the latest star from the Caherlistrane musical dynasty, sing at 3pm, accompanied by Colm Naughton and Pat Coyne on banjo/mandolin and guitar/backing vocals respectively. The Galway International Retro Orchestra will play on Tuesday June 12 at 3pm.

The Low Anthem at the Roisin Dubh

FANS OF AMERICANA are in for a treat at the Roisin Dubh with Rhode Island band The Low Athem playing at the intimate venue on Saturday week, June 16. Formed in 1006 by Brown University students and part-time DJs Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, the band made their mark with their 2007 debut album What the Crow Brings. Drawing on their background in classical music, they widened their instruments and sound to include everything from WWI- era pump organs to crotales (a form of antique cymbal). With the addition of new member Jocie Adamas in 2007, the band began 2008 in remote Block Island off the coast of New England.

CAVAN BASED outfit C O’Neill & Co will be playing Monroes tonight in a free gig. Since releasing their debut album Introducing last January, they have played in venues across Ireland supporting bands like The Sawdoctors, Whipping Boy, Big Country and The Minutes. Their album has been described as “a wonderfully ragged and whiskey-soaked release that’s full of dark observations and bruised and battered ballads” by Hot Press.
