New comedy club at Moycullen’s The Co-Op

GERRY MALLON, who ran the Comedy Club in Cuba* for many years is back with a new club, The First Friday Comedy Club in The Co-Op in Moycullen.
The club will open on Friday May 7 at 9pm with a show from the star and creator of RTÉ 2’s The Savage Eye - David McSavage.

LONG BEFORE David O’Doherty ever took to the stage he was a devoted student of comedy arts. He would regularly go to see his brother Mark perform at The Comedy Cellar in Dublin and watched the international explosion of Irish comedy in the late 1990s.

THE RECESSION is biting hard. Many have lost their jobs or have been forced to take pay cuts. The Government, for so long in denial about the economic downturn, is threatening savage cutbacks in the upcoming Budget, and industrial unrest looks certain.
It is a winter of discontent but many of us have been through it before. The 1980s was one long period of recession and economic stagnation, yet by the end of the decade there was a new vibrancy in the comedy circuit in Dublin, a vibrancy that would unleash an inspired new generation of Irish comics who have since gone on to become household names - among them was Ardal O’Hanlon.

SIX LEADING Irish and international comedians will present six new shows at the Laughter Lounge in the Róisín Dubh for this year’s Galway Comedy Festival
The festival kicks off on Wednesday October 21 and first up is Phil Nichol with his show A Deadpan Poet Sings Quiet Songs Quietly at 8pm. Here Phil will play Bobby Spade, a white-suited lounge lizard with a sideline in psychopathy.
