The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, TD, last week turned the first sod on the site of the new extension to GMIT’s Innovation Hub (iHub) at the GMIT Galway campus.
This extension will double the size of the Innovation Hub to about 2,400 m2, providing space for an additional three dedicated MedTech R&D units; 17 incubation units for start-ups in the Software, Digital Tech, Connected Health sectors; a Co-Working space; an Events Space; Social Hubs; and, breakout meeting and networking areas. The extension will also provide a dedicated Entrepreneurship Hub where GMIT researchers, staff, students and Industry can work collaboratively on the creation and development of innovative ideas in support of an Open Innovation Strategy.

Galway’s businesses are optimistic about their overall prospects for the current quarter, but over four fifths of them believe that traffic congestion in Galway is having a negative effect on business according to survey carried out by Galway Chamber at the end of June.
Almost 50 per cent of businesses believe that their income will increase in the quarter (July-September 2018) and over 40 per cent plan to take on more staff in the period while just under a third plan to re-invest in their businesses.

Research conducted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) reveals that two in five adults living in Connacht would consider buying an electric vehicle (EV). The research, which surveyed 1,000 people, found that the lower running costs of driving an EV was the primary reason for considering to purchase (41%), second only to helping the environment (51%).

A new study by researchers from Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) shows that the average failure rate for Irish restaurants in the first year is just 15 per cent.
The researchers believe this is well below the popular perception that the majority of restaurants fail in the first year and they hope it will encourage greater confidence and participation in the industry by restaurateurs and financiers.
