Mayo student claims prize at National Career Skills Awards

The National Careers Skills competition, sponsored by McDonald’s has announced the 2014 winners. Student Kate Iarajuli from Jesus and Mary Secondary School in Swinford was awarded third place in the transition year category for her work experience in a career as a financial accountant, at the recent National Career Skills Awards 2014. The National Career Skill Awards, run by www.careersportal.ie and sponsored by McDonald’s Ireland, recognise students who complete career investigations into their chosen area of interest and help equip guidance councillors with information in the area of career skills. Each student must demonstrate his/her understanding of a chosen career, the educational pathways that lead to it, the most relevant knowledge requirements, and the most important transferable skills needed to be successful. Presentations were made by Ciarán Cannon, Minister for Training and Skills at the Department of Education and Skills at an awards ceremony.

AirSpeed Telecom, the leading provider of integrated licensed wireless with fibre telecommunications services to businesses in Ireland, and Enet, Ireland’s open access network operator, won the Project of the Year (SME) category at the 2014 Tech Excellence Awards this week. The award was received in recognition of the establishment of Claremorris in Mayo as Ireland’s first fibre town.

Retailers from all over Ireland gathered at the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, for the prestigious awards ceremony run by BWG Foods, owner and operator of the Mace brand in Ireland. The Mace Excellence Awards are only given to Mace stores that pass a gruelling year-long inspection, including unannounced audits and visits from mystery shoppers. Five Mayo stores were given Mace Excellence Awards. The Mace Excellence Awards are now in their 11th year. The Mayo winners presented at this year’s awards ceremony were Mannion’s Mace Charlestown, Delaney’s Mace Castlebar, Delaney’s Maxol Mace Westport, Fallon’s Mace Ballinrobe, and Hunt’s Mace Claremorris.
Congratulating the award winners, Willie O’Byrne, managing director, BWG Foods, said: “Mace retailers strive for excellence in every aspect of their service to their shoppers and the local communities in which they are embedded. In meeting the exacting standards of the Mace Excellence Programme, Mace retailers and their staff consistently improve customer service in their stores. Following its recent expansion into the US, Westport based company Portwest Ltd, a leading global company specialising in the design and manufacture of high quality workwear, participated at the OTC (Offshore Technology Conference). The conference took place in Houston, Texas, as part of Enterprise Ireland’s trade mission to Texas led by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton. Portwest recently established a distribution centre and sales office in Louisville, Kentucky, investing $8.4 million in the project. Harry Hughes, managing director, Portwest Ltd, said: “Last month we were delighted to announce the creation of 50 new jobs at our headquarters in Westport as a result of our global expansion. Our presence at the OTC demonstrates our commitment to increasing our export foothold in the US.”

Gnó Mhaigh Eo recently launched its new logo and An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, was well impressed by the new logo when he visited the Gnó Mhaigh Eo office in Cedar House, Castlebar. Gnó Mhaigh Eo has been in existence since 2007 but in autumn 2013 a new team was recruited and they plan to relaunch the rebranded organisation later this year during Mayo Ideas Week. The new logo, which at a glance might look like a tree, is actually the map of Mayo held up by a hand.

Seven SuperValu stores in Mayo were recently presented with national awards in hygiene at the 2014 SuperValu quality awards ceremony in Killarney. Ryan’s SuperValu Ballyhaunis, Kavanagh’s SuperValu Westport, Castlebar, Kiltimagh, and Claremorris, Sweeney’s SuperValu Achill, and Moloney’s SuperValu Ballina, were all presented with the Supreme Excellence Ireland Quality Award. These leading SuperValu stores completed the SuperValu national hygiene and food safety programme, which is independently audited and identifies and rewards retailers that have performed to a consistently high level over a three-year period. One other store in the Mayo region, Cummins SuperValu Ballinrobe was presented with the Excellence Ireland National Hygiene and Food Safety certificate, which is an independent verification of the highest standards of operational hygiene and food safety in the food sector business. Commenting at the awards, Martin Kelleher, managing director, SuperValu, said: “This is a fantastic endorsement for SuperValu retailers in Mayo and a real testament to the efforts of their management team and staff. The quality awards recognise continued commitment to maintaining excellent hygiene and food safety standards. Year-on-year these entrepreneurial food retailers continue to push out the boundaries of excellence, with three quarters of the SuperValu stores audited receiving the much sought after Supreme Hygiene Award.”
