Dolan continues his flying form

There is no stopping Conor Dolan in this year's Galway 5km Series. The GHC athlete strode to a fourth successive win in the recent Loughrea event, clocking 16.42 for the win, ahead of Timmie Glavey of Mayo AC and Kevin Bartholomew of Craughwell AC.

The first woman home was Carol Ryan of Craughwell AC in 18.29, with Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry AC, second, and Sinead Brody of GCH in third. Shauna Bocquet of Craughwell AC took the wheelchair race honours in 18.37, on what was a more testing course than the other series races.

SSE Airtricity Moycullen broke their recent losing spell in basketball's Superleague, but it was a close finish against Commercial.ie Eanna in Dublin on Friday night.

In this second match-up of the season with Eanna, it was one of Moycullen’s weaker performances of the season, but they will have been happy to get the win on the road, albeit with the last shot, 81-79.

Galway teams will attempt to retain their national cross country team titles on Sunday at the national championships in Abbotstown, Co Dublin.

Galway men’s squad go over 10km, and are captained by Sean McDermott of Castlegar AC, and will look to John Moroney and Andrew O'Donnghaile of GCH, Brian Furey of Rathfarnham, and Vincent McGuinness of Crusaders AC to lead the charge in what is surely the most competitive race on the entire athletics calendar.

Galway athletes were in the medals at the 29th annual British & Irish Masters International Cross Country in Glasgow on Saturday.

Competing against masters from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland in three races were Martin Kearney, Martin McEvilly and Christine Kennedy of GCH, all competing for Ireland, Kearney and Kennedy both came home with team gold in their respective categories (O60), and McEvilly claimed a silver team medal at O65 level. Kennedy also picked up an individual silver medal at O60 in the ladies' masters race

Craughwell youngsters claim Connacht title

Craughwell NS senior boys made history on Saturday when winning the Connacht Primary Schools Cross Country title for the first time at Sligo IT.

The boys were led home by an outstanding performance from Ross McGuinness with an eighth place finish followed in with an incredible run by Robert Urquhart, who placed 18th, just ahead of Eoin Byrne who had the race of his life to take 19th place. Next home was Evan Hallinan 27th, Luke Flynn 33rd, and Evan Moran 40th for the victorious squad
