First call out for Clifden RNLI’s new Shannon class all-weather lifeboat

The volunteer crew of Clifden RNLI joined Aran Islands RNLI and Shannon-based Rescue 115 helicopter to carry out a search of the waters around Bunowen Bay last weekend.
A member of the public reported seeing a distress flare in the area around Bunowen, west of Ballyconeely at midnight on Friday. Shortly afterwards the crew launched the new Shannon class all weather lifeboat St. Christopher, her first call on service since being brought to Clifden three weeks ago.

Homeless charity Galway Simon Community has raised concerns as the latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government reveal that the number of young adults (18 – 24) living in Emergency Accommodation is growing faster than any other category, against a backdrop of rising rents and a deepening housing crisis. There were 481 people living in Emergency Accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in April, an increase of 19% on the previous year. The increase in the number of young adults living in Emergency Accommodation in the same period was 44%.
Galway Simon established a dedicated Youth Service in 2016, in collaboration with Galway City Council and Tusla, to support young adults at risk of and experiencing homelessness. The Service currently provides a home for 12 young people at any one time, many of whom are care leavers, whilst also supporting others in the wider community.

Galway West TD Noel Grealish has expressed disappointment at the recent decision by the Government to not extend the reduction in bus fares to a company which offers public transport to thousands of Knocknacarra residents.
The Independent TD had highlighted the fact that there was now a 63 per cent difference in some fares between the privately-owned City Direct company and Bus Éireann services, when he tabled a Parliamentary Question calling for the Government-subsidised 20 per cent average reduction in Bus Éireann fares to be extended to cover all passengers.
