An era comes to an end next week when the Galway Lourdes Pilgrimage Trust will cease its activities because of the rising age profile of its members.
For six decades, the Trust has been travelling with pilgrims to the French shrine. However, they feel that the task is no longer sustainable.
“Regretfully we as a committee have decided that the time has come and a decision was reached we would have to finish up.
As the average age of our members is 70 plus, pushing wheelchairs in high temperatures is no longer possible,” they said in a statement.
To mark the occasion, they are holding a celebration Mass in the Commercial Boat Club Woodquay on Saturday June 11 at 8pm.
This Mass is to thank all past and present committee members and pilgrims who have travelled with them for many years. The Trust had been going to Lourdes for the past 60 years.
They would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Spiritual Directors and Medical staff for their excellent care and support down the years.
The Trust would like to take this opportunity to invite any past committee members and pilgrims who have travelled with them in the past to join them for tea, coffee and light refreshments on the night.
