Last summer, Irish sport mourned a legend. When Tony Keady died suddenly in August at just 53 years of age, a whole county cried, and the rest of the country stopped in its tracks to say goodbye to a legend of the game of hurling.

Except Tony Keady was more than a legend. In 1988, after leading Galway to a second All-Ireland title in succession, he was crowned the greatest hurler in Ireland. He was 25 years of age, and there was nobody like him, nobody to touch him in the maroon No.6 shirt.

Project shows robots can help dementia sufferers

A research project led by NUI Galway has established that companion robots can have a positive impact on older people living with dementia. Such is the impact of this research, it has been featured in a new European Commission study analysing the impact on society of EU-funded research and innovation in technology for active and healthy ageing. The MARIO project is among 25 projects credited, and the only one in Ireland, with having had the most influence in Europe over the last 11 years. The project is also being featured across Europe this week on the EuroNews TV channel’s Futuris science programme.

From the difference which it has to other places, a difference created by the choices we make in terms of the type of place we want to live in. I think of this every week when the team and I here at the Advertiser sit down to put together a newspaper that we hope touches in some respect a variety of the issues and areas that go to make up Galway. A pot pourri to match the pot pourri that surrounds us all.

I also think of this every time we lose someone who has made a contribution to what is Galway, to the way we think and approach life. We are fortunate to have have myriad individuals who through their intellect, ability, and drive have gone on to plaster into place one of the building blocks of the city we have today and the city we will have in fifty years time.

Cyclists to travel from Maynooth to Galway tomorrow to raise funds for the Coombe Hospital

Some 200 cyclists are due to arrive in Galway tomorrow (Friday) evening as they complete a day-long cycle from Co Kildare in aid of the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital.

The annual cycle will see students from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, travel west to raise funds for the charity Friends of the Coombe.
