The World Meeting of Families 2018 will be officially opened with a ceremony in Galway Cathedral on Tuesday August 21 at 7:30pm.
The ceremony will be led by Bishop Brendan Kelly and will include a blessing of families with the relic of Blessed Karl of Austria.
Blessed Karl is one of the very few official saints of the Church who was also a husband and father. Blessed Karl was the last emperor of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
The relic of Blessed Karl of Austria is being brought to Ireland by his great grandson, Imre de Habsbourg-Lorraine. The ceremony on the 21st August will focus on the importance of family life.
Before the ceremony at 7pm there will be a talk on Blessed Karl of Austria by his great grandson, Imre, for those who are interested in learning more about the saint. This talk will be followed by the opening ceremony for the World Meeting of Families at 7:30pm.
Then at 8pm, the Veneration of the relic of Blessed Karl of Austria will take place and Galway Cathedral are encouraging families to come and attend this blessing.
