As well as the significant environmental damage caused, almost €17 million in public money has been lost in EU fines, and O’Hara argues that there must be accountability within the ESB for their handling of this case.

Minister must address refusal of consent for Derrybrien windfarm development says Cannon

Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon has called on Eamon Ryan, the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to immediately intervene in the ongoing saga of a wind farm development at Derrybrien, Co. Galway, on foot of Tuesday’s refusal by An Bord Pleanala to grant retrospective consent for the wind farm.

The refusal means that Ireland must continue paying a fine of €15,000 per day, which was imposed by the European Court of Justice in November of 2019. To date Ireland has paid over €15m in fines. “The ESB had an opportunity here when lodging its consent application with An Bord Pleanala to address all of the concerns raised by locals in Derrybrien and South Galway.

I am not a believer in the need for utter happiness to be the default mood, perpetuated in the belief that without complete joy, everything else seems mundane. On the contrary, I feel that there is more fulfilling contentment to be secured from having overcome a struggle than being handed joy on a plate.

Perhaps there is truth in the belief that there should be three grand essentials to contentment in this life — something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. It is the latter that allows for the most possibilities and it is in this time of the year that I have always found it the strongest.

Rocky Road walk to remember friend to start from Tuam

Damien O’Connell is embarking on a walk in memory of his beloved friend, David Conroy. Damien, originally from Ayrfield, invites members of the Galway community to join him on his trek to help raise money for a noble cause.

A tragic car accident in August 2021 took David Conroy away from his loving family, friends, and community. Damien asserted that David was an “inspirational community leader”, a real pillar of his community. He would always “inspire people to be their best”. He was someone who was “always open to learning”, and put his best efforts into everything he did.
