Researchers at NUI Galway are involved in a new European project which hopes to deliver a cost effective tool for the speedy diagnosis of infections such as pneumonia. The test would reduce diagnosis time from days to hours, so that the appropriate treatments can be administered as early as possible for the best possible outcome.

More than 500 students, faculty, and staff of Semester at Sea® (SAS), the nation’s premier shipboard programme for study abroad, will arrive in Galway at 8:00 am on 31 August for a one day exploration of Galway before also docking in Dublin. Ireland is the first country on the academic voyage itinerary. Sarah Cosgrove, a student from the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway joined the shipboard community in Halifax where embarkation took place on 23 August. All participants are traveling aboard the MV Explorer, a state-of-the-art passenger ship that Semester at Sea has outfitted as a traveling university.

There is no doubt about the role that the consumption of alcohol plays in the economy of this city. No city could earn the monicker of being a party city, a city that never sleeps, without acknowledging the role that drink plays in the creation of this perception. Just a cursory search of the world Galway in Twitter reveals the number of exchanges hourly that praise Galway for being a place where time gets lost, where today ends and tomorrow begins, inevitably lost in a haze of alcohol and music.
And this perception is used to sell the place. From Volvo to Failte Ireland, the image of Galway being a nocturnal city is one that has served us well. The local economy in Galway city may be extremely fortunate to attract many festivals and other celebrations throughout the year, however there is a downside in that irresponsible alcohol consumption can lead to many problems, not just on health but anti-social incidents creating difficulties for law enforcement.

Galway gardai are continuing their efforts to establish the identity of a body found washed up on the rocks of a Lettermullen beach last week with assistance now being sought from international police organisation Interpol.
Officers have been trawling through missing person files and conducting a number of enquiries in order to identify the body of man discovered by a person out walking at Tra Dhireann in Huston, Lettermullen, last Thursday at around 3pm.
