Councillors refuse to extinguish fight for South Connemara fire station

Galway county councillors have refused to give up their fight to ensure that the people of South Connemara receive their fair share and benefit from the basic life-saving service that an additional fire station in an area such as Carraroe could provide.

At last week’s meeting a motion put forward by Cllr Séan Ó Tuairisg and seconded by Cllr Seamus Walsh, which called on Galway County Council to seek funding from the Department and Government for a fire station in South Connemara, was unanimously passed.

Next year the Franciscans and Poor Clares are celebrating a Year of the Holy Name of Jesus beginning on Friday, January 3. This came about as a result of a discovery by the Galway Poor Clares that a wave of devotion to promote the holy name of Jesus began after a retreat to their monastery conducted by a Franciscan friar, Fr Francis Donnelly, in January 1914.

Plenty to do at Coole this Christmas

There is lots to do at Coole Park this month. The park is a wonderful place to take a walk with two waymarked trails to follow. The family trail is less than two kilometres and takes you past the site of the house, into the walled garden and through the woodland. Along the way you can stop to see the small herd of red deer, and try to spot the stag displaying his antlers or look out for signs of red squirrels searching for nuts to eat.
