Connacht Angling Council rejects proposed compulsory angling registration charge

The Connacht Angling Council has unanimously agreed to oppose the introduction of any compulsory angling charge as part of a new Inland Fisheries Bill for 2014.

The decision was made as part of a motion which was passed at the council’s annual general meeting recently, where members voiced their concerns over what they saw as an attempt by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the State to take control of, and police, Irish angling for the purposes of monetary gain.

I remember years ago covering Western Health Board meetings in far flung corners of the province where the matron of the hosting hospital would provide fine fillets of salmon and local sean nos singers to entertain the councillor-filled Board so that they wouldn’t starve on the return leg of their expenses-paid journeys.

The Health Boards were a microcosm of the political culture that we sometimes think is a thing of the past. Among those members was a councillor from Mayo called Padraig Cosgrave whose riposte to every Board request for funding for experts was to say "sure what is an expert but a local lad who went away and came back."

And because it has been such an acquiescent friend, we have tended to disregard all of its possibilities, the good and the bad.

McNelis warns against criminal gang targeting city smartphones

Smartphones are a major target for thiefs and the public must take care and be vigilant according to Labour city councillor Niall McNelis.

More than 12,000 mobile phones were stolen in Ireland in the first 10 months of last year. It is understood that a criminal gang has been targeting Galway but that arrests have been made in recent weeks when a large number of phones were found. The Gardaí are running a special operation targeting smartphone thieves, called Operation Aughrim.
