Labour will select its candidates for the three Galway city wards for May’s Local Elections at a convention to be held in mid-February.
The exact date and location of the convention has yet to be decided, as has the number of candidates that will be on the party ticket. However the party’s five sitting councillors - Tom Costello, Nuala Nolan, Billy Cameron, Colette Connolly, and Niall McNelis - will automatically go before convention next month.
In the meantime, party branches will be meeting to discuss candidate options and strategies and liaising with the party’s national working group on the elections. Prospective candidates are being interviewed and are being called up to Dublin for interview.
Party insiders say that despite recent poor poll showings for Labour in recent times, the party remains confident it can hold at least four of it seats in May’s election.
