Two Welsh choirs to raise funds for Galway Hospice

Two memorial Concerts by two Welsh choirs will be held in Barna Church on Tuesday next October 28 and in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Wednesday October 29 in aid of Galway Hospice.

Côr Meibion Ardudwy (male choir) programme is varied and includes folk songs, songs from musicals, classical songs, songs gathered from different countries and as the choirs are Welsh, a few hymn tunes, all of which will be sung with much gusto and enthusiasm. They also include some Irish songs in their repertoire. The choir boasts as many as ten soloists in their midst so a varied programme is guaranteed.

22,000 turn out for successful Baboró

End of the misery

Sighs of relief could be heard emanating from living rooms, offices and pubs across the country last Wednesday evening as finally after six years of unrelenting misery on Budget days there was some form of relief for hard-pressed citizens. Having endured such negativity in recent years most people would have settled for ‘not being any worse off’ after this Budget but in the end most people probably ended up modestly better off.

Sixty six homeless in one night looked after by COPE as crisis grows

A local charity which operates services for homeless people provided emergency accommodation for 44 adults and 22 children on one night at the start of this month.

COPE Galway also had contact with an additional 11 people who were sleeping rough in the city on that Monday night on October 6. A further two people reported that they slept in a squat.

NUI Galway law school director appointed to Government working group

Dr Ciara Smyth, Director of the Doctoral Programme in the School of Law, NUI Galway, has been appointed to the government’s Working Group on Asylum.

The Working Group, which is convened by the Minister for Justice and Equality and the Minister of State at the Department of Justice and Equality, and chaired by retired High Court judge, Mr Justice Bryan McMahon, is to recommend to Government what improvements should be made to the State’s existing direct provision and protection processes for asylum seekers in the short and longer term.
