Morse Code, Clifden and the dawn of global communications

Frank McCurry and Tom Frawley of GMIT, whose radio heritage work has featured on the BBC Coast series, will give a talk at 7pm on Wednesday February 11 in NUI Galway on radio and the Clifden Marconi Station as well as a demonstration of Morse Code, the first system used to send long-distant messages using electricity.

The lecture, which takes places in the university’s Insight Centre for Data Analytics located in the Dangan Business Park, will be followed by a guided tour of the Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland which includes a new exhibit on the development of radio and the importance of the Marconi Station at Clifden in the birth of worldwide communications.

At least three Galway women travel to UK for terminations every week

A minimum of three Galway women travel to England or Wales for an abortion every week, according to official figures from the UK Department of Health.

The data, released under Freedom of Information shows that in the years 2012 and 2013, 271 women with addresses in Galway made the journey to England and Wales for a termination, which works out at an average of just under three women per week. Figures for 2014 will not become available until the summer.

Students from each of the agriculture and forestry courses in Mountbellew Agricultural College participated in the recent annual Colleges Challenge Day, held in conjunction with Macra na Feirme and hosted in Mountbellew Agricultural College.

A total of seven competitions ran simultaneously in the afternoon; all were specialist skills competitions including stock judging, tractor driving, welding, plant identification, grafting, forestry skills, and a problem solving team challenge.

You see people in the town, stopping and looking up at the sky and mouthing the words ‘blue’ , ‘bright’ and then moving on again and thinking of doing daft things like sitting outside at cafes and drinking a hot drink just hot enough to warm ya but not too hot to make you look ridiculous — you there sitting outside like a hard, braving this new fresh sensation. Like mammals peering out into the great brightness after the dark of winter, we stagger at first, unsure of what to do with this new found space and light and desire to do something other than that what we have been doing.
