Councillors debate contentious issue of unfinished housing estates

A suggestion by a number of county councillors that a special €100,000 fund, which has been made available by Galway County Council to fund badly needed repair works in unfinished estates across the county, be used to solely provide public lighting, was rejected by councillors at this week’s local authority meeting.

The proposal had come from councillors in the Loughrea Electoral area and Fine Gael’s Jimmy McClearn outlined the thinking behind it. “One hundred thousand will most likely be only enough to sort out one estate. However if we spend the €100,000 on lighting only, many estates can benefit from the safety and security that offers.”

Hunt for thugs who terrorised elderly couple

The vulnerability of elderly people living in rural County Galway has once again been highlighted following a violent attack in the Craughwell area last night.

Gardaí in Loughrea are appealing for witnesses after the aggravated burglary which occurred at the home of an elderly couple at around 10pm.Three men entered a house in the Cregg Mul Greaney area and assaulted an 80-year-old man and locked him into a room, while they ransacked the house. The men escaped with a sum of money.

County councillors unanimous in opposition to extension of city boundary

Civil servants were accused of being ‘highly paid, underworked, living in an ivory tower, hatching crazy plans and taking no regard of what people want’ at Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council.

These were the terse words of Councillor Jim Cuddy during a discussion on the possible merger of the two local authorities in Galway. A number of councillors expressed their belief that the plan was a ‘done deal.’ There were mixed views within the chamber about the viability of such a move.
